Anzhelika Varum, pop singer and actress
Russian pop singer, actress, Honored Artist of Russian Federation (2011), Anzhelika Varum (her real name is Maria Varum) was born on May 26, 1969 in Lvov, USSR in a creative family. Her father Yuri Varum was a composer, and her mother Galina Shapovalova worked as a theater director. Her parents toured a lot, so the little girl was brought up by her grandmother. The father was totally against Soviet music schools and taught his daughter himself. Maria began playing the piano at the age of five. She was a very talented girl and even toured with the school theater group.
After school Anzhelika went to Moscow to study at the Theatre Institute. However, she failed exams and worked as a backing vocalist in her father’s studio.
In 1990, Anzhelika recorded the song “Midnight Cowboy”, which became a hit. With the same song the singer participated in the TV program “Morning Star”.
A year later her debut album “Good Bye, my boy” was released.
Two years later, Varum released her second album “La-la-fa”.
In 1993, the singer became the finalist of the annual festival “Song of the Year”.
For her third album “Autumn Jazz” the singer was awarded Ovation in 1995. And in the same year she was recognized as the best singer of the year.
In 1996, the perfume “Anzhelika Varum” was presented in shops.
The album “Winter Cherry” was released in 1996.
In 1997, Anzhelika tried herself as a theater actress. Leonid Trushkin invited the singer to play in the play based on the “Banker” by Hanna Slutsky. Varum performed with celebrities such as Lyudmila Gurchenko, Yevgeny Simonov and Armen Dzhigarkhanyan. By the way, for her role Anzhelika was awarded the Seagull Theatre Award.
In 1997, Varum began to sing with Leonid Agutin, whom she married some time later. On February 9, 1999 Anzhelika gave birth to their daughter Elizaveta, who now lives with her grandmother in America.
According to the mass media Anzhelika is pregnant with the second child. Despite her age (she is over 40) she wants to give birth to the child herself and refused the services of a surrogate mother, which is very popular among show business stars. Leonid Agutin is very happy, he wants to have a son.
In 2001, Anzhelika and Leonid gave a joint concert with world music star Al Di Meola. Varum – Agutin toured a lot in the United States, Germany, Belarus, Israel, Ukraine and Russia.
Anzhelika created Varum Records Company, where she is a singer, musician and producer.
The singer has played the title role in the film “The sky with diamonds” directed by Vasily Pichul. In 2003, Anzhelika played a role in the detective story “Kamenskaya-3” and in 2005 she appeared in the movie “The Twelve Chairs”, which was based on the legendary work by Ilf and Petrov.
